FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

The California Afterschool Outcome Measures Project, funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the California Department of Education, has developed student measures of skill development and positive behavior change that can be used by afterschool programs in California and elsewhere. The "Frequently Asked Questions" and answers provided below describe this project.

Thank you for your interest. We hope you will join us in this important field test.

The Toolbox will be made available for use by the public in Spring 2012.

Unfortunately, the field test requires that participating programs have access to computers with Internet.

No, all survey responses are anonymous. We will provide a summary report of your students’ performance on the outcome measures to you. We will not provide your summary report to others without your written permission.

In earlier work involving more than 500 classroom teachers surveys and more than 700
program staff surveys we found that teachers and staff typically require less than 5
minutes per student report that they complete. They may complete reports in multiple
sessions, e.g. a staff or teacher completing reports for 20 students could do 4
reports a day (20-minute session) on 5 different days. Students required
approximately 5-10 minutes to complete the surveys.

No, the CDE will not require programs to use these surveys. They are an option that programs can select, if they so desire as an alternative assessment of program effectiveness to augment or replace standardized test scores and/or measures of homework completion (California Education Code 8484).

Yes. Programs participating in the field test will receive a summary report of their students scores measured Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. These findings can be used for internal evaluation and/or to report to funding agencies

Reduction of risky or negative behavior is an important goal for some programs.

Your individual survey responses will only be viewed by the California Afterschool Outcome Measures project staff. Staff will develop a summary of student scores for each participating program. These reports will be confidential and given to each site individually. Only aggregated student scores across all programs will be used in our summary to funding agencies (CDE, Packard).

We know that afterschool programs can have beneficial effects on students’ skills and behaviors. Developing tools to capture these effects on the students in your program can help you to measure how your students are doing in these areas and to guide program improvement. You also will be able to use these scores as an ASES accountability assessment instead of or in addition to standardized test scores.

No. This is not part of the statewide evaluation being conducted by UCLA. The California Afterschool Outcome Measures Project is focused on developing and testing an online toolbox of measures that programs can use to document students’ skill development and positive behavior change.
The California Afterschool Outcome Measures Project offers programs the opportunity to have students, program staff, and teachers try out a new online toolbox of student outcome measures. A summary of the student scores for your program will be returned to you. These scores are NOT part of the State-wide evaluation of ASES programs.

If you are reporting how your students perform/behave in the regular school day classroom then complete the Teacher Survey.
If you work with students in the afterschool program and are reporting how your students perform/behave in the afterschool program then complete the Program Staff Survey.
